Benefits of MRS Membership:
Member mines in need of rescue teams during emergencies may avail themselves of rapid response coordination by MRS, leveraging Rescue Team Members from fellow member mines.
MRS maintains a supply of equipment available to members during emergencies.
Trained MRS personnel conduct all maintenance and repairs on breathing apparatus used by Rescue Team Members.
Additionally, MRS personnel inspect mine equipment on-site to ensure standardization and compatibility with teams and their rescue equipment.
Member Mines collectively share the costs and resources associated with maintaining rescue equipment and providing training to Rescue Team Members.
Knowledge and expertise are shared and coordinated by MRS.
The Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996, Regulation 16.5 (Emergency Preparedness and Response), stipulates that the employer of every underground mine must, among other requirements, participate in a Mines Rescue Scheme.
To adhere to these regulations, Mines Rescue Services (MRS) administers such a rescue scheme, allowing mines and affiliated mining companies to become members.
The scheme encompasses both “A” and “B” class members, with “A” class members comprising mines equipped with their own volunteer Rescue Team Members, while “B” class members do not.
During emergencies, member mines requiring the assistance of rescue teams may request rapid response support coordinated by MRS, drawing upon Rescue Team Members from other member mines.
